My Elbow Pain
I suppose I’m just another one of those people – tennis player for over 30 years, rock climber and in general a pretty active guy but definitely not over the top or super human. Probably a lot like you since you’re reading this. My elbow pain started not because of an accident or a noticeable injury, it just started to hurt one day. Then it got worse and worse until one day, it felt that it was here to stay. The best way to describe the pain was one of pinpointed, searing pain right on the bone itself on the inside of my right elbow. Then a pulling and stretching sensation from that bone along the inner part of my arm down about four inches toward my wrist. So simple and seemingly something that would fix itself like so many minor scrapes and bruises, I had no idea the multi-year journey this would turn out to be.
My goal on this website is to have you read no more than what fits on your screen. I have suffered chronic back pain to now chronic golfer’s elbow that also developed into tennis elbow and then moved on to my other arm, and I simply want to share what’s worked for me and what I’ve learned after spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars over the past 3 years.

The punch line is that I’m pain free. The other punch line is that I’m convinced once you’ve reached the tipping point of the elbow pain threshold, curing is not possible. But managing it so you don’t have pain is 100% possible. I’m living proof.

"Pain Free" in Four Simple Steps
But as promised, before you may scroll, here is what you should know. You should NOT give up whatever activity you’ve been told that is causing your golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow. You should maintain your activity (I will explain why later) and follow four simple things to ensure you can live, exercise and play pain free. After all, pain free is the objective – whatever condition caused the pain in the first place will not cause any permanent damage or change your physiology, it’s the pain that’s debilitating.
What are those four simple things?
A stretch that is so easy and relaxing, you’ll look forward to doing it – it’s nothing like physical therapy or working out. Two minutes of this stretch, three times. That’s six minutes right?
A simple exercise that also isn’t strenuous or hard (which an important philosophy for my method) that takes two minutes, three times. That’s another six minutes.
A strengthening exercise that, you guessed it, is easy. Yep, another two minutes, three times.
That’s a total of 18 minutes.
If you can spare 18 minutes a day (or 36 if you can do it twice a day for results twice as fast), I GUARANTEE you will feel your tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow pain melt away in a week to 10 days. GUARANTEE.
Oh, there’s one more thing that’s easier than the three exercises above. It’s something you do when you sleep.

My 3-Year Journey with Golfer's Elbow
So let me share my 3 years journey of golfer’s elbow pain that added on tennis elbow and then moved into my other arm as well. As I share my story, you’ll understand very specifically what I’ve tried, how I’ve spent thousands of dollars and countless hours reading, watching, exercising, stretching and lying on doctors' and therapists’ tables.

I am literally depressed as I write all of this down thinking of all the wasted time and money, but mostly the time I lost that I could have been enjoying life and activity and family.

Rest and Ice the Elbow
When I first felt the onset of golfer’s elbow in my case, I did what a lot of people recommended. Rest and ice. Perhaps I should have really rested and really iced. Let’s keep in mind that to follow the recommendation of doing nothing with your dominant elbow and icing 20 minutes ten times a day, I would have to live the lifestyle of a rock star who has absolutely nothing else to do all day. I think you know where this is going, but here’s what happened with my golfer’s elbow progress.
Heat the Elbow
When resting and icing didn’t work and the days passed beyond what is recommended for icing, I went to the next phase of treatment often recommended – heat. The idea of heat and the resulting impact on my elbow pain is described here.
Flexbar for Elbow Pain
After what became a few weeks since the elbow started to hurt, I was becoming frustrated but still refused to go see the doctor. So I did the exact opposite and what drives every doctor completely mad. I turned to the Internet, of course, for a home remedy for elbow pain.
I found a mountain of websites and videos that claim the perfect cure for golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow. Many tried to convince me by sounding medical and official using terms like medial epicondylitis and lateral epicondylitis. While I wasn’t desperate, I was annoyed enough to start trying some of the ideas that sounded too good to be true or had hundreds of thousands of YouTube views.
The first and seemingly very,very harmless, nothing-to-lose idea with tons of YouTube views and likes was to buy a Flexbar. I was very hopeful and the Flexbar cost less than $20 on Amazon. Massaging Away Elbow Pain?
I wasn’t about to give up when the elbow kept hurting and the Flexbar seemed to actually cause the elbow pain to flare at times. I figured there’s little to lose from trying other non-invasive, seemingly inexpensive and possibly magical cures for my elbow pain. All the while not realizing that I had already spent weeks of discomfort, refrained from activities I loved and experienced mood swings based on a nagging feeling the pain may be chronic or permanent.

Massage was the answer. Lacrosse ball, massage stick, masseuse, foam roller - all useless remedies for my golfer's elbow.
Hello, Tennis Elbow?!
By now, I’m starting to feel a little bit of pain on the lateral side of my elbow. Could it be? Tennis elbow too?! I had been protecting and overcompensating for my golfer’s elbow so much, I was developing tennis elbow – the dreaded lateral epicondylitis!
NRT: Nutrition Response Testing
After consulting the almighty Internet, I got duped by a site that had me jumping through hoops and clicks and cliffhangers and subscription cost to find out that nutrition was the key. I loaded up on foods full of antioxidants and avoided sugar and, well, nothing. I felt better about my diet but felt zero impact on my now golfer’s and tennis elbow.
The Ortho's Elbow Pain Solution
I was getting more desperate and fearful of lifelong pain. If you’re here, I’m guessing you’ve had the same feeling of free falling into the valley of negativity. I dreaded the decision, but it was time to see my doctor. I was due for a physical anyway so I used the opportunity to casually mention the elbow pain. When she found out that it had been almost a year by this point, she freaked out and referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays and MRIs later, she had an interesting elbow pain solution for me to try: complete immobilization with a brace.

Well, it all had made sense and I was really, really, really hopeful – wishful may be the better description. But the wrist brace didn’t work. I type a lot and have kids – maybe if I had completely immobilized the wrist for weeks as I was suggested, it would have helped. But like everything else and the difference with my method of managing elbow pain is that most solutions simply aren’t realistic or practical. And another big difference – I now know that doing absolutely nothing does not cure golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow.
There are people who have had elbow pain alleviation from complete halting of activity – in most cases months to sometimes over a year. If that timeframe isn’t depressing enough, do you know what happens to all of these folks when they resume their beloved activity? Isn’t that the point of curing the elbow pain?
When the wrist brace didn’t work, I knew and had been told that surgery probably was the next option. So I didn’t go back to the ortho…
"Release" the Elbow Pain
But I had taken an important step to treat my golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow via the traditional medical route. Through my primary care physician, I found my way to a sports medicine specialist who was convinced that she could “release” the tendons and muscles that were causing pain via active release techniques. Acupressure and The Graston Technique
Next up, physical therapy based on a foundation of acupressure and the Graston technique to scrape the “scar tissue” around my elbow with ultrasound tacked on after the treatment. I couldn’t believe I was paying $100 per session to have some guy “scrape” my skin, so I found a Graston knock off and decided to treat the elbow pain myself!
By now you’re probably thinking, this guy has zero patience and so dismissing some or all of these ideas is a bad idea. That may be true, but bear in mind I’m giving you the fast forward version of my epic odyssey – by this point, I was well over 18 months into trying various elbow pain cures and giving each a good month or more to work. Homeopathy for Elbow Pain
Around this time, my dog started having seizures. Not only was I becoming a Google guru on golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow, I was knee deep in researching epilepsy and seizures in dogs. If it isn’t clear already, I’m not a big fan of medication – and medication for life. So I started down the path of a homeopathic route for my four-legged child and ended up getting brainwashed that it could work for my elbow pain! Remember NRT? It’s quite amazing actually and something probably worth doing for general health, but for elbow pain, not so much.​
Cortisone Shot, Out
Plasma Rich Platelet Injection, In
Coming up on my second anniversary of living with golfer’s elbow and now tennis elbow pain, I was more moody, desperate and negative than ever. I was ready to escalate matters. I spoke to yet another doctor – a very famous doctor in the Bay Area that has treated every well known, superstar athlete you can name. He laid out two immediate options I could try – both costing several hundred dollars out of pocket. I already had spent thousands, cost didn’t matter, and I couldn’t bear the thought of giving up activity or simply lifting my kids or carrying groceries for the rest of my life.
He first mentioned trying a cortisone shot. But from his voice, I could tell he wasn’t too optimistic about it. That was good because I had gotten one in my back for lower back pain years ago that did zilch. So we opted for option number two, which after much reading and research, I was very, very, very excited about. And so was the physician. Plasma rich platelet injection to instantly heal elbow pain. I couldn’t wait!​
Kaatsu
So while PRP seemed to have temporary relief (it felt so good and I was so optimistic!), the results didn’t last and less than 2 weeks later, I felt the pain slowly drain back into my elbow. A completely sinking feeling after getting my hopes up, but I wasn’t done trying. And neither was my doctor. Hearing that PRP didn’t solve the elbow pain, he said we could try another injection (did you read my description of the PRP procedure – no way!) or Kaatsu. Kaatsu? If I haven’t convinced you yet that I’ve tried everything for elbow pain, I hope you’re coming around now.
After my first Kaatsu session (other than the session itself), I felt great – no elbow pain! Until a few hours later… But doc had told me I needed to keep the Kaatsu up several times a week for a few weeks. Not super practical for me since he was about an hour and a half away. So after a few sessions, I took matters into my own hands. I devised my own Kaatsu system (with my doctor’s blessing) to treat myself at home.
This probably was the most hopeful I had been in many months as the pain melted away by the end of each session and stayed away for a couple of hours. Just a couple of hours of relief was worth it and gave me optimism that the next treatment would be the treatment to eliminate the elbow pain permanently.
Vasper
But with each lightheadedness spell and dizziness, something didn’t feel right. So I went back to, you guessed it, Google. What I learned about Kaatsu (and the guy who developed the system) was too scary to continue, but I made a very interesting side discovery on the way.
I discovered that essentially some entreprenurial folks in the Bay Area took the concept of Kaatsu and copied the good parts and took away the dangers associated with Kaatsu. They called it Vasper System. Hailed by NASA, professional sports teams and a growing list of doctors, I couldn’t wait to try it and was lucky to live within minutes of a Vasper facility.
For weeks I went religiously to Vasper, again spending hundreds of dollars. Similar to Kaatsu, I felt great and pain free immediately but without the lightheadedness and pain associated with severe blood constriction. So while it was comfortable, after a couple of
months, I realized that Vasper was doing what several other things did – provide very short, temporary relief and no long term cure.
Back to Basics: Ice, Heat, Advil
In addition to my new best friend Google, I was talking to anyone and everyone who had suffered golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow. Repeatedly I was told the only thing that worked was stopping activity and basically never picking it back up again – not an option. Then a friend said, back to basics my friend – try the combination of ice AND heat. Ice for 20 minutes, heat for 20 minutes.
So I went to CVS and got the very best supplies to make this cumbersome task as practical as possible – at home, at work, throughout my daily activities of being on the go with kids. What I found was alarming…
Cryotherapy
But if Advil worked, it must mean that it’s a swelling problem right? Wrong is the answer as you’ll find out if you sign up to learn my recipe for curing elbow pain. But I was convinced nonetheless and found myself at a chiropractor’s office where I shelled out hundreds of dollars for a couple of months to try cryotherapy and laser pain therapy for the elbow pain.

Like Kaatsu and Vasper, it worked magically - instantly. But I was either losing my mind or having amnesia. How could this be any different than my Kaatsu results - with the same dangers? And with very short-lived pain relief, I had simply tried a failing solution all over again and wasted another couple of months.
TENS, Microcurrent, Acupuncture, Massage
I was ready to give up hope. So much so that I decided to return to my very delinquent follow-up to the ortho and be told to have surgery. After all, it now had been over a year since she said we probably should pursue that if her wrist brace didn’t work after eight weeks…
God bless my wife - she also had been spreading the word and happened to chat with an old college friend who claimed to be pain free after years of elbow pain. Neither one of us knew him all that well so we couldn’t tell if he was pain free because he had not returned to normal activity, but anything to delay surgery was appealing.
Defeated, I Gave Up
Finally, I gave up. Simply gave up. Gave up the idea of ever feeling pain free – it had been so long, I didn’t remember what it felt like anyway. So I decided that I would figure out a way to alleviate it as much as possible but go back to regular activity – rock climbing, tennis, pull ups, all the things that made me enjoy life. I got a Theraband, dusted off the Flexbar again, started popping a few Advils every so often when I was having a bad day and occasionally taking out the blood restriction straps. I was ready to live with elbow pain for the rest of my life.
A New Hope
I believe everything happens for a reason. I started going back to the climbing gym and ran into a very old friend who I had no idea was a climber. A very advanced climber, he was starting back up after having had a couple of kids – and developed golfer’s elbow! He was doing what I was doing – Googling and trying desperately to heal. He and I texted things we’ve tried before and one day, he sent me a link to a video made by an English climber to fix golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow brought on by climbing.
And that led me to the miracle that allows me to play tennis, climb, do calisthenics, all pain free. Am I cured? I doubt it. But I am pain free and if pain starts to creep back into my elbow, I know how to squash it in 18 minutes.
One thing Dr. Mike said that made a lot of sense to me. It takes years and years of elbow damage to cross the pain threshold. It’s not that one day your elbow is 100% healthy and pain-free and then the next day something happens to make it painful. Think of the pain threshold as a tipping point. You spend decades damaging the elbow but not crossing the pain threshold. Once you do cross it, it takes work to go below the pain threshold – as it turns out, not as much work as I thought and certainly not months or years and requiring a cessation in all activity.
Pain Free Elbow in 18 Minutes a Day
As I mentioned above, it takes 18 minutes a day for 7-10 days and you can go below the pain threshold. But this doesn’t mean you’ve undone the decades of damage. Which is why you don’t hear about chronic elbow pain from youngsters or young adults – makes sense right? And that’s okay because your damaged elbow will not fall off or stop working – it’s not ideal but you’re safe and as long as it’s pain free, you now are taking good care of it and you can resume full activity!
So the climber’s blog and video was one of the four discoveries. In fact, several of the things I tried in the past led to the other three – but not in the ways they were originally intended. I used the wrist splint in a novel way. Then I combined a mobility exercise with a stretch and strengthening movement that in 18 minutes a day, allows me to live elbow pain free. There’s a nifty forearm brace that I use as a caution when playing tennis and climbing but based on the many occasions I’ve forgotten it, I know it’s unnecessary.
